Located in the State of Oaxaca on the south, west of Huatulco Mexico, this town was founded in 1928 as a port for the transportation of coffee. Tourists started to discover it for the great surfing conditions and on the other side the coffee started to be delivered by road.
Today it’s a thriving town getting more important as the time goes by. But is still a best kept secret of Mexico Beaches.

Beaches of Puerto Escondido
To get to this cozy cove you have to go down about 175 steps from the road. It is about 140 meters long by 30 meters wide and the waters are greenish and warm. This is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. It is a busy beach during high season.
This long beach is divided into three sections by rocks, accompanied by lush vegetation make a beautiful sight. The width of the beach varies between 30 and 70 meters as some points. The sands are grey bordered by calm warm green waters. This beach may be reaches by road and by sea.

This beach is great for families with small children because the waters are shallow and calm. The waves are slow and gentle. Actually it seems like a natural pool ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling on its amazing coral reefs.
There are restaurants, and possibilities to rent hammocks and water sports equipment. There also boats for rent that offers tours of all the beaches of Puerto Escondido. This beach may be quiet busy during weekends.
This is the next beach going east From Playa Principal. It is not so long as the others and the waters offer the same characteristics of Playa Principal. This beach is perfect for beginning surfers since the waves are moderate.
The sunsets seen from this beach are awe inspiring. This beach offers all services like dressing rooms with showers and toilets. It also offers the renting of equipment for water sports as well as chairs and umbrellas for those like me that like to do nothing.
Puerto Escondido is a Mexican Mecca for surfing
This beach is located west of the lighthouse and just east of Puerto Angelito, separated by some rocks. Playa Manzanillo is a good place for snorkeling and swimming. Mexico Scuba diving is at its best here.
It bears the name of the Bahia Principal (main bay) of Puerto Escondido. It is about 500 meters long and between 40 to 80 meters wide.
The waters are green and calm, so this is the place to relax and get a perfect suntan to show off when you get back home.

Playa La Punta
The name means “the point” and it means the very last beach of the area. This beach offers lifeguards and some restaurants. At the very point or Punta there is a lighthouse.

Surfing in Puerto Escondido Mexico
It is a very long open beach of approximately 30 to 40 meters width. The beach has a steep slope and varies from light o darker shades of grey. The waters are warm and crystal clear.
The waves here reach up to 6 meters making it an ideal spot for surfers. As a matter of fact every year in November there is a surfing tournament with a three day duration attracting surfers from all regions of Mexico and abroad.
Puerto Escondido Mexico is definitely one of the jewels of Mexican Beaches.
