There are many beautiful Madeira Beaches. The Island of Madeira Portugal is part of a Portuguese archipelago, located across the shores of Morocco on the North Atlantic Ocean.

The other two islands are Porto Santo and the Desertas. It is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal being the others the Azores Islands. They are also located north of Tenerife part of the Canary Islands of Spain.

The islands are famous for its landscapes, flowers and Madeira wine; all this above the beautiful beaches visited by about one million tourists a year.

Porto Santo

The beach of this neighboring island is fine golden sand stretching for almost 10 Km. Porto Santo, called the Golden Island provides a golden sand that has many healing properties used in spa treatments.

This is the best destination for those seeking white sand Madeira Beaches. It is about two and a half hours boat ride from Madeira, so it is possible to visit and come back later in the day.

It is located in the heart of Funchal Madeira, the capital. It features a couple of beach resorts like Club Naval do Funchal and Ponta Gorda. You have to pay your entrance fees.

In Madeira most of the volcanic beaches are rocky or have large pebbles. The largest with pebbles is Praia Formosa in the western suburbs of Funchal with free parking.

But, one finds also other areas with natural beaches, which have more and more grey sand and less pebbles removed by the tides

Doca do Cavacas

It is located next to Praia Formosa. It is a charming rocky beach resort which can be reached from Praia Formosa by a connecting tunnel

Praia da Barreirinha

It is located near old town Funchal. This is a beautiful beach with restaurants, changing rooms and showers. This beach is very popular among locals.

Calheta Beach

This is an artificial beach created with fine sands from Morocco. It is an ideal beach for families with small children. You may rent lounging chairs and umbrellas. This beach has all the amenities you may need, like restaurants, lockers, showers and a marina with many stores.

This beach formed by two lovely artificial beaches is located about 30 minutes to the west, is considered one of the top beaches of Madeira. It offers a wide range of water sports and amazing views.

Porto Moniz

The Natural Swimming Pools of Porto Moniz were formed by lava, creating these small pools protected from the Atlantic Ocean. There are restaurants and bars on this beach.

This is a small black sand beach located on the eastern tip of the island. It features all kind of amenities. The beach is just 200 meters long, about 25 minutes from Funchal near Caniçal fishing village

Santa Cruz

This is a beautiful stone beach and Its main attraction is a water park with nine slides and two pools.

Located east of the island near the town of Machico, lays this pebble beach with yellow sands and all kind of amenities.

Praia da Lagoa

In this small fishing village located on the north coast, called Porto da Cruz, lays this black sand beach. It is a modern beach with all amenities.

It is located under the Cape Girão, which is the most famous cliff in Madeira. It is famous for its natural beauty and the crystal clear waters.

Reis Magos Beach

Another little grey sandy beach with a protective pier is Reis Magos in Caniço de Baixo about 10 minutes from Funchal.

Calhau da Lapa

It is a secluded beach in Campanario at the foot of a cliff. Here you may enjoy the clear waters and spectacular views.

This is a small pebble beach ideal for swimming and spending a relaxing day on the beach. It features all services to visitors including life guards, bars and restaurants.

Located on the city bearing its name is a black sand beach and a protective wall against the waves.

Jardim do Mar beach

It is located on the southwest of the island and features three beaches, Portinho, Enseada and Vigia.

It offers excellent conditions for surfing with waves up to 8 meters high. The Big Wave Team Challenge Competitions was held here.

Praia de Paul

Located on the southwest of the island it offers two pebble beaches, Porto and Ribeira das Galinhas.

It is a clear water beach but with no amenities. It is still a great beach for surfers and just for sea lovers.
