The Republic of Fiji

The Republic of Fiji is an island nation in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 2,000 km or 1,300 miles northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. It is surrounded by the following neighboring islands: Vanuatu to the west; French New Caledonia to the southwest; New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands to the southeast; Tonga to the east; Samoa, French Wallis and Futuna to the northeast and Tuvalu to the north.

The country comprises an archipelago of more than 340 islands of which more than a hundred are inhabited, besides an array of islets. The two major islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu accounting for close to 90% of the population of almost 850,000 of the country. Suva, the capital of Fiji, is located in Viti Levu Island and the population is located mainly around the coast.

Most of the beaches are scattered throughout the islands, some of which are tiny coral atolls. Most of the beaches are located around quiet lagoons protected by coral reefs, ideal for snorkeling.

Viti Levu

  • Viti Levu’s Natadola Beach is, by far,  one of the best beaches of Fiji with excellent swimming and snorkeling and other activities like horse riding.

  • Nananu-i-Ra is a tiny island offshore of Viti Levu. It is surrounded by white sand beaches, mangroves and little bays. It is also renowned for windsurfing and diving. There are no villages or roads on the island and you may find there a few villas with mostly European residents.

Mamanuca Islands

These are about 20 islands mostly very small and hilly surrounded by breathtaking beaches. They are located off the coast of Nadi Fiji and accessible by boat in a range of 20 to 90 minutes; or by plane in 10 minutes.

The Mamanucas are the center of tourism of the country and many beaches are taken by resorts that make sure that the beaches stay clean and perfect every morning. There are many beach water sports activities like kayaking, parasailing and snorkeling. There are still a few deserted islands that can be visited by boat from Nadi.

  • Qalito is a hilly island better known as the home of Castaway Island Resort is an amazing white sand beach which makes the Castaway one of Fiji’s most desired resorts.

  • Malolo Island has a lagoon deep enough for swimming and snorkeling. Besides the breathtaking white sands it features one of Fiji’s best beach bar.

  • Tivua Island is a small coral cay surrounded by a white sandy beach with just two simple wooden cottages. The island is used as a day trip destination by day, and offers absolute solitude at night. This is a wonderful down to earth experience on a beautiful island that takes just eight minutes to walk around.

  • Mana Island has beaches on both sides of the island but the south beaches are better and more protected from the winds. The beaches of Mana are just impressive.

  • Matamanoa Island is home to Matamanoa Island Resort. The sands and the lagoon are the perfect scenery for swimming and snorkeling.

  • Malololailai Island  is connected to the larger Malolo Island by a marshy isthmus, Malololailai is home to three resorts: Musket Cove Island Resort, Lomani Island Resort, and Plantation Island Resort. Although the lagoon is shallow, the beach in front of Lomani and Plantation Island resorts is one of Fiji's most picturesque, with coconut palms hanging over it in places.
