Colombia Beaches
On Two Oceans

When we think of Colombia Beaches, for some reason the first thought goes to its fabulous Caribbean Beaches on the cities of Santa Marta, Barranquilla and Cartagena Colombia. But you’ll be surprised that the Pacific coast of Colombia features a few great beaches.

Here we are going to write about the Beaches of Colombia  on the Pacific, the Caribbean and on the distant islands of San Andres and Providencia belonging to Colombia.

Colombia Beaches on the Caribbean Sea

Colombia is located between Panama on the west and Venezuela on the east on the northern coast of South America. The Caribbean Coast has many important tourist spots with excellent beaches like Barranquilla, lovely Cartagena and Santa Marta Colombia. Let me mention a few of the beaches.

  • Tayrona National Park

This area has a few beaches but I must warn you that many of them are not safe for swimming due to the strong undertow currents. These beaches are mostly for hiking and starting your trails to the jungle. All this is located near Santa Marta Colombia.

Arrecifes Beach has strong currents and we do not recommend swimming.

  • El Cabo Beach is a camping ground from where people start their hiking in the area. Is an isolated beach.

  • Taganga, located a few minutes from Santa Marta is an off the beaten path fishing village with crystal waters and lots of vegetation.

  • La Guajira Peninsula with beaches like Neimao Beach and Punta Gallinas.

  • Rosario Islands or in Spanish Islas del Rosario located near Cartagena are just a short boat ride and offer an natural spectacle not seen so often. They are great for swimming, snorkeling and the other water sports.

  • Playa Blanca or White Beach is a peaceful spot near Cartagena. This beach is located on the Island of Baru. You may get there by boat from Cartagena. In Baru you find the Parque Nacional Corales del Rosario made of 43 tiny isles and many coral reefs. This setting is a dream come true of Scuba Divers.

Colombia Beaches on the islands in the Caribbean

An Archipelago of three islands and many tiny cays

San Andres Island, Providencia Island and Santa Catalina are an archipelago of Western Caribbean Islands near the coast of Nicaragua but belonging to Colombia for several centuries.

Other tiny islands of the group are Bolivar, Albuqueque, Cotton, Haynes, Johnny, Serrana, Serranilla, Quitasueno, Rocky and Crab Cays.

Isla de San Andres is the largest and most important island of the San Andres Archipelago; the island covers an area of 26 km².

San Andres is located 80 km southwest of Providencia Island, 190 km east of the Nicaraguan coast of Central America, and over 700 km northwest of the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

How the archipelago came to be a Colombian territory is the result of piracy, wars of independence, slavery, immigration, sugar, cotton and religion.

The archipelago consists of a chain of low hills, forming a central spine to the island, which is in turn bordered by a low coastal plain. The culture of the islands is a mix of English Caribbean and Spanish Colombian.

Spanish is the official language but locals also speak English. The flying time from mainland Colombia is about an hour and a half.

Colombia Beaches of San Andres Island

The beaches are mostly located on the northern coast of San Andres, since the west side is rocky and has no beaches at all. So, the resorts are located on the northern coast and therefore the center for restaurants and bars on the island. There are just a few beaches on the east coast.

I call it a real “Well Kept Secret” by Colombians that frequently come to the islands for vacations. It is slowly becoming known and soon we may see flocks of International tourists visiting the area.

  • Sprat Bight is the most popular beach in San Andres. It is great for swimming due to shallow waters. If you rent a boat you may wander to other small cays

  • Sound Bay has high waves that crash against the coral. This beach is one of the best in the archipelago

  • Cocoplum Bay is a great place to swim due to its calm waters.

  • The Cove is shallow and divers can “walk” into the water to reach the coral reefs.

  • Johnny Cay, also called Islote Sucre is the nearest small island near San Andres with white sand beaches and some vegetation.

Colombia Beaches in Providencia Island

The sister Island of Providencia is still virgin and unspoiled. This Caribbean Paradise is just a short flight or by catamaran from San Andres. Isla de Providencia or Old Providence is a mountainous Caribbean island. This one is closer to Nicaragua but is still part of the Colombia Department of the three islands. They are all located midway between Costa Rica and the Island of Jamaica

Providencia is a popular scuba diving destination because a great reef lying on the Eastern part of the island. Although unknown by the world this reef runs in the same category of the big ones of Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Belize Barrier Reef and Andros Bahamas.
