South American Beaches
A Pleasant Surprise


Let me introduce you to the South American Beaches. The continent on the south is immense and surrounded by three main seas, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea on the north.

In order to organize this page I did a lot of research and found out many beaches that I have visited in the past like Punta del Este Uruguay, Ipanema Brazil or Isla Margarita in Venezuela, just to mention a few.

We are working on pages on the beaches country by country, but here is only a summary of the best of the best. Let me mention the three best of each country and we are going to “travel” on a clockwise direction starting with Brazil, the marvelous giant of South America.

Salvador Bahia – Located on the northeastern point of Brazil this is a real tropical area with lots of African influence. The beaches here are to die for. Just mention a few: Porto da Barra, Piatã, Velha Boipeba and Barra Grande.

Rio de Janeiro Beaches - The most famous Beaches of Brazil are located in the area of Rio de Janeiro. They are Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon among others. For more information on Rio de Janeiro beaches click here.

Fernando de Noronha – This is an archipelago of 21 islands and islets off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You may get there by plane from Natal.

Punta del Este – This is most known by far beach resort area of Uruguay Beaches. In the last decades it has developed as a great beach metropolis where people spend their summers in beautiful condominiums and great hotels

Montevideo – This is the busy Capital of Uruguay and you don’t need to travel to Punta del Este to enjoy beaches like Buceo Beach, Pocitos and Carrasco Beaches.

Colonia del Sacramento – Even though in Uruguay it is located an hour ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site with miles of great beaches.

Mar del Plata – It is located 400 km or 250 miles east of Buenos Aires on the Atlantic Ocean. This seaside resort has been compared to Miami Beach for its many beaches, restaurants, entertainment and constant action.

Necochea – Located southwest of Buenos Aires along the mouth of the Quequén Grande River. The beaches here are wide up to 300 meters in some spots.

PinamarThis is a sophisticated beach area about 350 km from Buenos Aires. It name comes from the pine trees that surround the area. It is a center for summer activities on its sandy hills and blue waters. The architecture of the city is also an attraction due to its peculiarity.

Viña del Mar – This is the undisputable touristic capital of Chile. It is not only a beach resort; it is a center of culture, entertainment and gastronomy. The Festival de Viña del Este is an important event for the Latin American music.

Bahia Inglesa - In English “English Bay”, is a small village near the port of Caldera in the Atacama region of Chile. This site is known for its white sand beaches and relatively warm waters. Here you’ll find accommodations of all types like campgrounds, hotels and summer houses offered for lodging.

Zapallar – Located north of Viña del Mar, this is one of the most aristocratic beach resorts in Chile. There are two important beaches to mention here are La Chica y La Larga. Due to its geographical position protected by the hills surrounding it, they enjoy a great weather year round.

Mancora – This beach is pure White sands and perfect conditions for surfing due to high waves. It is located on the north of Peru and great for those visiting the country and looking for beach resorts.

Punta Sal – With excellent weather this town located on the north of Peru is one of the nicest beaches in the country. It is summer all year round here due to the proximity to the Equator. The waters are warm due to the confluence of the currents of El Niño and Humboldt.

Miraflores – This actually a exclusive suburb of Lima, the Capital of Peru. You can enjoy the beach without having to leave Lima. This beach resort is known for its shops gardens, restaurants and cafes while watching the Pacific Ocean from its cliffs. This is Peru at its best.

Muisne – It is located in the northwest of Ecuador in the province of Esmeraldas. It is actually a semi-island known as Isla de Muisne or the Enchanted Island. The beaches here attract locals and foreigners alike.

Atacames – This is one more beach resort in the province of Esmeraldas. It is very popular with people of Ecuador and neighboring Colombia and may get very busy during vacation time. It is what we call a party village with lots of entertainment and good food.

Montañita – This popular village is located on the southern Ecuador coast. This beach is popular with surfers and it is home to annual surfing competitions attracting surfers from all over Latin America.

Santa Marta – Located on the Caribbean Sea it is one of the loveliest bays in South America with natural charms like sea breezes and pure mountain air.

The beaches are of fine sand covered by the warm waters of the Caribbean. The Tayrona National Park is nearby with more beautiful beaches.

San Andres – This group of islands are located in the Caribbean near the coast of Nicaragua, but are definitely Colombian. 

La Guajira Peninsula – This is the northernmost point of South America near the border with Venezuela. This place is off the beaten track and offers a few beaches like Cabo de la Vela, Playa Pilon de Azucar and Punta Galhinas.

Choroní Beach – This is a popular beach located in Aragua, Venezuela. The actual name of this beach is Playa Grande but the proximity to the colonial town of Choroni has people calling it that name. This is a horseshoe sandy beach backed by the steep hills of the lush Henri Pittier National Park.

Los Roques This is an archipelago of Venezuela, located in the Caribbean, north of La Guaira, Caracas´ port.  The awesome coral reefs are perfect for diving and boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

Margarita Island – This is Venezuela’s Resort Island located off the northern coast. It is a typical Caribbean Island with sunshine all year round. Not only is it a paradise for shoppers due to its free port status, there are lots of things to do and have fun.
